Semmelweis Museum

Semmelweis Museum of Medical History
original name: MNM Semmelweis Orvostörténeti Múzeum
for enthusiasts
The house where the man who made doctors wash their hands was born shows the history of medicine from inside one life; the Wellcome in London and the museum of the Academy of Medicine in Paris hold more, and neither ties a place to a person like this. The collection is small: two houses, an hour and a half to walk both. Anyone expecting the whole history of Hungarian medicine will be given only its beginning.
Minimum route
1–1.5 hours
Founded
1965
What to see

The grave of Semmelweis in the courtyard of the house where he was born. Medical instruments from antiquity to the twentieth century, gathered across Europe. The Golden Eagle pharmacy in Tárnok utca: the fittings of an old town pharmacy, cabinets, vessels and laboratory. Anatomical wax models of the eighteenth century.

Minimum route — 1–1.5 hours for the essentials

35 minutes in the Apród utca house, the instruments and the wax models. 10 minutes in the courtyard at the grave. 30 minutes at the Golden Eagle pharmacy in the Castle, if that is on the way too.

About the museum
Ignác Semmelweis (1818–1865) was born in this house at the foot of the Castle Hill; the museum opened here in 1965 and has carried his name from that year. It is now a branch of the Hungarian National Museum. Its second house is the Golden Eagle pharmacy up in the Castle, in Tárnok utca.

If the Golden Eagle pharmacy up in the Castle turned out to be the best of this house, a second interior of the 1830s was moved whole to Kiscelli, above Óbuda.

If the Semmelweis house felt too private a story, the parent museum on Múzeum körút sets the same age into the country’s general reckoning.
